They started in Liverpool, went to Africa to pick up the captured and chained slaves, and brought them to the British Colonies in the Caribbean, picked up cotton and other goods, sailed to Liverpool, delivered their cargo and then went back to Africa to do it all over again!

Apparently, there were meticulous logs kept on this human "merchandise", and the birth, baptism and marriage records of the slaves were maintained by the Churches. With some effort, it was possible to construct the family tree of these slave families. For people of African origin, whose ancestors came to the western world through this brutal, inhuman and heinous trafficking, there was some comfort in knowing something about their ancestors.

Al Roker was keeping his dispassionate demeanor in reporting his story with the objectivity of a journalist, but I could not stop crying! It brought back memories of the ABC miniseries "Roots", which gave me a glimpse of this darkest chapter in American and Western European history. It has been searing in my conscience ever since.

Brutalizing human beings because of their race, religion, ethnicity or their inability to defend themselves against an evil force has not stopped, in spite of our being "enlightened", "educated" or "civilized"!

What happened then has been happening ever since, in different part of the world. Holocaust, Rwanda, Darfur, Islamic Jihad, suicidal bombings, air strikes on defenseless civilians, Serbian death squads, butchering of peaceful Buddhist monks in Tibet ....

The list goes on and on and on!

While these are visible examples of brutalities, there is also an invisible form of brutality going on - hidden under the anonymity of blogosphere, there is constant hidden violence perpetrated by lies, innuendos, misinformation and other forms of hatred perpetuated by chain emails - such as calling Barack Obama a "registered Muslim".

Racism and bigotry is alive and thriving in our country. Is our country going to be victim of such vicious attacks and moral violence?

Look around. You will find several such racists and bigots around you. They survive and do their filthy deeds because we let them, through our tolerance and nonchalant attitude.

On this 45th anniversary of the "I Have A Dream" speech, Democrats have chosen Barack Obama as their candidate for the office of the President of the United States. He is expected to accept the nomination tonight.

Is he going to get a fair chance of winning this election? That is up to us.

In my view, the time has come to silence such ugly deeds and promise to ourselves and to the world around us that we are not going to tolerate this any more.

And just like we promised ourselves after the Holocaust, we must renew our promise "NEVER AGAIN"!

Peace and Blessings!Searchbeamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11106738175859195188noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1792281961052908216.post-73465977099751820372008-01-13T08:15:00.000-08:002008-01-13T10:43:59.713-08:00TWO HILLARYs!Today, I was watching Tim Russert's "Meet The Press" program, and his guest was Democratic Party's Presidential contender Hillary Clinton.

After the first few minutes into the program, I noticed something strange:

Hillary was using the words "I", "Me" and "US (as in her and Bill Clinton)" at an alarmingly large number of times! Almost as if she was obsessed with herself!

Over the years, I had admired Hillary for her bold stands on issues, and her commitment to issues related to children and poverty in particular, and her commitment to act on behalf of these two unrepresented constituencies. All along, I had a sneaking suspicion that there was more to it than met the eye, but I could not put my finger on it.

Today, I did!

I saw two Hillarys:

One Hillary is the one she believes in and portrays as an honest, dedicated, caring and compassionate person;

The other Hillary is the one we all see in real life: self-justifying, obfuscating, conniving and in a convenient context that she has created for herself, on her own terms!

Throughout the hour of justifications of her position on Iraq war and velvet-glove attacks on Barak Obama, the underlying message was "ME, ME and MINE".

While attacking Obama on his 2002 anti-war speech and his subsequent "support" of the war in 2005, 2006 and 2007, she conveniently side-stepped the fact that she not only AUTHORIZED this obscene war, but supported it all along.

Never did I hear one word of regret of her position, other than saying that she made a mistake of believing in Bush! This sounds like a convenient way to cover up her own REAL mistake in pre-authorizing the war!

On the other hand, when I was watching Barak Obama's speeches - the victory speech in Iowa and the concession speech in New Hampshire- I noticed that he used the words "You" and "Us" almost all the time and used "Me" and "Mine" very rarely.

Could it explain the fundamental difference between these two candidates? I believe it does.

Honesty counts, and it counts even more so in this Presidential election than at any other time, because DISHONESTY is what has brought us to these perilous times!

Perhaps more revealing than this convenient logic is her serious lapse of knowledge of our Constitution! Our Constitution expressly PROHIBITS an unprovoked and pre-emptive war against any nation in the world. It also prohibits the Congress from delegating the authority to declare a war to the President of the United States. This is one of the major pillars of the separation of powers.

One would think that being a graduate of Law School and a practicing Lawyer for many years, Hillary would know and understand our Constitution. It appears that such is not the case. If she had any doubt about these fundamental tenets of our Constitution, all she had to do is to WALK THE FEW STEPS to the doyen of Constitution, Senator Robert Byrd, who would have set her on a straight path.

There is one more issue that is gnawing at the conscience of "We, the People". That is the issue of political dynasties. So far, we have had twelve years of George H.W. Bush and 7 DISASTROUS YEARS of George w. Bush. In between these two, we have 8 years of Bill Clinton, and subsequently 8 years of Hillary Clinton in the Senate! Counting in this year as Bush's last year in office, that comes to the dynastic rule of two families for 36 years!

Is this what we want in our government? Are we to assume that there are no other competent people in our country qualified and willing to serve our country as President? Unless we accept the cockamamie idea of genetic superiority, the resounding answer is "NO"!

At present, Barak Obama has shown the courage, charisma, intelligence and the fortitude to stand up to such a formidable political machine. If we decide to get away from the toxic dose of tokenism and racism, and for a moment put aside the fact that Hillary is a woman, and no woman has ever been elected as a President, and also that Barak Obama is an African-American, and no African American has ever been elected as a President, it stands to reason that we should choose the most qualified and competent person to pull our country out of the current mess and lead us to a better future for the next 4 -or possibly 8- years.

One of the most important qualification would be to know, understand and appreciate our Constitution and to take the oath of office that formally declares the obedience to the Constitution of the United States. It is an oath that has to be taken with full understanding, conviction and commitment. Our present President has been reported to say that our Constitution is "A goddam**d piece of paper". Look what happened over the past seven years because of disregard for this most important document that governs the function of our Government and gives us citizens the fundamental and unalienable rights. Our country is in a political, moral and financial morass! We have hawked our future to China, Saudi Arabia and other wealthy nations of the world, and we are entering into a bankruptcy on all of these three fronts.

We need a political and moral savior!

Who would that be?

Hillary?

Obama?

Or someone else?

You decide!

But do remember the history! If you don't, it is bound to repeat itself, and you would have nobody to blame but yourself.

If that happens, and when your children and grandchildren ask you a few years down the line why we are such a poor, third rate country, be sure to tell them the truth!

Peace and Blessings!Searchbeamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11106738175859195188noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1792281961052908216.post-72144105425702855882008-01-04T07:09:00.000-08:002008-01-04T19:38:49.972-08:00TAKING BACK OUR COUNTRY!Now that the political season for Presidential election has started in earnest, let us try to figure out how we can take our country back from the ruthless gang that hijacked it 7 years ago.

They hijacked our country because we fell for the dirty tricks and bald-faced lies. We did not question their integrity or their truthfulness. We never questioned their judgment or their competency. Above all, when we found out the truth about their lies, deceits and their usurping our Constitution after calling it a "GODDA*N Piece of paper", we did not stand on the street corners and rooftops and condemn their actions.

To make the matters worse, we elected Democrats to a majority in the Congress and they put incompetent "leaders" like Nancy Pelosi, who usurped the Constitution also, and declared Impeachment "Off the Table" and dishonored her oath of office.

We took it all lying down!

Is this what we are going to do in this election?

If we do, we might as well write off our democracy and our form of government, and say goodbye to our country that has stood up for 230 years as a champion of democracy and freedom, and as a beacon of hope for the rest of the world.

If we want to take our country back form these scoundrels and install it back to its glorious pinnacle, we must do something NOW, something that will assure our success for this election and all the future elections to come.

First of all, let us identify the disease that is causing so much damage to our country:

In one word, it is the power of money.

Money from lobbyists;

Fat cats pumping huge amounts of cash into the party coffers;

Money flowing into creating and putting out so-called" issue ads";

Political Action Committees doling money out to candidates, their parties and using it to flood airwaves and print media;

Big corporations asking their employees to pay for the fund-raising and then reimbursing them for that amount, effectively corrupting the system;

Money from phony off-shore corporations outside the reach of our laws.

There are several other "devices" used by corrupt politicians and corrupt corporations and even foreign governments to rob the power of our vote.

The disease on our political system is the cancer of money. Like any good doctor, we should not treat the symptoms (like what we have been doing for the past umpteen decades), but go to the root cause and nip the root cause of the disease in its bud.

If we want to stop money from polluting and corrupting our system of government, we must remove money from the system. We can accomplish this in four fundamental ways:

1. Term Limits: "One Term And You Are Done" system of representation - strict term limits of one term. Our Congressmen, Senators, State legislators and even our local government leaders have used their elected offices as a means of perpetuating their power and creating a
lucrative career for themselves. Our representative government DOES NOT NEED career
politicians to be at the public through all of their adult life and make it gold mine to get Pensions, healthcare, retirement benefits and all other perks. We don't need these kind of "perpetual public servants", and we can't afford this system either! One term limit eliminates all of this colossal waste of resources and opens the field for constantly rejuvenating representation that is not stuck in neutral. "OTAYAD" should be our mantra!

2. Death of Lobbying: Completely eliminating the lobbying system that corrupts our government. This insidious monster is eating our democracy for lunch. If citizens or corporations want to redress a problem, the only Constitutional way is representation by petition. Even a single penny used to promote this in an illegal way should disqualify the individual or the corporation for that term of the Congress, which is two years.

All Presidential and congressional candidates should use public financing and nothing else. If someone wants to raise the issue of freedom of speech, the simple answer is money is not speech. Only a living, breathing person can speak! Freedom of speech should be strictly used by that standard and new laws should be passed to put this beast to pasture, once and for all.

3. Media Bias: This issue is often raised, but never settled. The fundamental role of the media is to report news and facts, and not to make them up. Networks and newspapers "declaring
winners and losers" is totally out of character of our system of government. Every media outlet must be established by a charter and any violation of that charter would cost that medium loss of its charter.

4. Judiciary: All Federal and State Judges, including the Supreme Court Judges, should be nominated or appointed a for a fixed term of seven years. These positions should also not be
a life-long feeding trough, with all kinds of benefits and perks. Right now, Judges are asking for more pay because their brethren in private practice are making much more money. If this is the case, they should be free to leave their benches and go into private practice after meeting the "Revolving Door" laws and rules, and let the Free Market take care of it. To save them the hardship, we should establish a fund to pay for their "Relocation" to private practice.

To accomplish all of this and even more positive changes, we need to elect people who will do this job, and do it right.

That is where our current business law comes to our rescue. All business agreements are usually formalized by a contractual agreement and obligation. We can bring this system into public domain by asking every political candidate to sign a contract defining the terms and conditions of his/her candidacy for an elected public office.

THIS SHOULD BE THE STARTING POINT OF OUR MARCH TO RETAKE OUR COUNTRY AND OUR GOVERNMENT BACK FROM THE CULPRITS.

Here is a draft of the proposed agreement:

********0********

AFFIDAVIT OF CONTRACT TO SERVE AS AN ELECTED FEDERAL OFFICIAL

I, _________________, hereby declare my desire to be a candidate for the elected office of (__________ for the Congressional district # ____) (Senator for the State of ________) (the President of the United States).

Under the penalties of Law and penalties of perjury, I hereby promise to :

a. It is the last resort for the citizens to redress an issue that is raised by unfair and faulty interpretation of the Constitution.

It's very existence is a beacon of fairness and impartial interpretation of the Constitution, and it is the ultimate arbiter and protector of the citizens against dictatorship and tyranny.

Therefore, the nine citizens who sit on this bench have to be the very best that we have, in terms of scholarship of the Constitution, legal acumen, intelligence, absolute and total impartiality and fairness beyond reproach.

In our system, the President nominates a person to fill in a vacancy on this court, and the Senate gives its consent or dissent. The system works well when both of these parties act in good faith and confirm someone who is the best person that this nation can choose. It fails when the President chooses someone based on his own personal or ideological agenda and disregards the "good faith" prerogative. Sometimes, the President may nominate the best candidate, but the Senate and some Senators can bring in their personal agenda or outright vendetta to bear in this process. The knife cuts from both sides of the blade!

During the past two years, a strange thing happened. Justice Sandra Day O"Connor retired, and while her replacement nominated by the President- John Roberts- was being considered, Chief Justice William Rehnquist passed away. Political planets seldom align in this fashion that gives the President an unusual opportunity to nominate two justices within a short period of a few months. Anther sinister planet that lined up at the same time was that the President's party was in power in the Senate. It gave him the weapon to use his personal agenda and his own litmus tests to nominate two of the most agenda-driven right wing zealots- John Roberts and Samuel Alito. He even took the most extra-ordinary step to elevate Roberts' nomination to the vacancy of Chief Justice, totally bypassing the norm of the appointed Justices choosing their own Chief Justice! Alito, whose legal acumen, impartiality and fairness were questioned by many legal scholars who have seen him in action as judge, was nominated regardless of the general consensus on his qualifications.

Although Roberts is fairly close the the legal scholarship and judicial philosophy of Rehnquist, Alito replaced Sandra Day O"Connor, one of the true independent and impartial voices on the Court, and THE swing vote that she used to effectively balance the ideology-driven and agenda-driven cabal of Scalia and Thomas who have been trying desperately to take our country back to the Dark Ages. With her gone and Alito - whom I call the silent torpedo- taking her place, the Court has now suddenly become right-wing and agenda driven, defying the premises of the Constitution. When Justice Anthony Kennedy, who has suddenly decided to join the retro- group, the 5-4 decisions coming out of this court are flabbergasting and defy the most common legal principle of fairness.

I call the cabal of four Conservative, agenda-driven justices "Dark S.T.A.R.s" - S(calia), T(homas), A(lito) and R(oberts). These four are showing all signs of taking our country back to the Dark Ages. When you add Kennedy to the mix, it now becomes a S.T.A.R.K. reality!

Some of the most controversial decisions handed out by this S.T.A.R.K. syndicate in 2006-2007 session are:

Gonzales v. null (05-380)
Gonzales v. Planned Parenthood (05-1382)

FEC v. Wisconsin Right to Life (06-969)
McCain v. Wisconsin Right to Life (06-970)

Morse v. Frederick (06-278)

null v. Freedom From Religion (06-157)

Parents Involved v. Seattle School District No. 1 (05-908)
Meredith v. Jefferson County Board of Education (05-915)

All of these decisions have managed to take our country back to the dark days of our history.

It will take an act of God or some calamity of monumental proportions to change the course of this Court. Our country is headed back to the days of Spanish Inquisition and Crusades!

Catastrophic events such as the drastic change of the course of the Supreme Court are signs of more terrible things to come.

So, my fellow citizens, tighten your seat belts. You are in for seriously bumpy weather.

The only recourse we have is to make sure that we elect responsible people to the Senate in 2008 elections, so that any new vacancy that happens on the Supreme Court will get a balanced, fair and intellectually honest legal giant as replacement. If you choose a democrat as President, you can at least be sure that your views will count in the nomination process.

There are a lot of highly qualified persons that can fill the void. Just keep your fingers crossed and in November, 2008, use your fingers to choose the right candidate. Let your fingers do the talking!

Peace and Blessings!Searchbeamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11106738175859195188noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1792281961052908216.post-54619583628274646542007-05-18T10:52:00.000-07:002007-05-19T11:28:44.643-07:00BUY MEXICO!!!In the current atmosphere of heated debate over the serious problem of illegal immigration across the Mexican border, everyone has a view point.

Some people think that whoever came here illegally (which means by breaking the laws) must be thrown out without mercy, because they have no business of being here.

Some others think that our economy - especially the agriculture and hospitality sectors of our economy- needs the labor to offer reasonable products and services to the consumers.

Some others consider that it is a moral and humanitarian issue, because ours is a nation of immigrants and that we should not throw people out because they are honest and hard-working people who came here to avoid poverty and starvation and feed their families.

A large portion of Americans are ambivalent, because they really don't know the issue and are not concerned one way or the other.

Every year, around $40 Billion dollars are spent on this border security fiasco, where a few hundred armed members of the security forces hunt down Mexicans crossing the Southwestern deserts and play the cat-and-mouse game with "coyotes" who charge each illegal immigrant anywhere from $1500 to $4000 to take him across the border.

Tangled in this web are organized crime, drug smugglers, cops on the take and corrupt Mexican military and paramilitary units complicit in all of these and more.

California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Texas are bearing the huge cost of social programs, education, and massive burden on healthcare industry because of unpaid medical care. As these illegal immigrants spread across the country, these costs shift along with them to other cities and states. They cannot shift this burden to the Federal Government where it logically and legally belongs. This burden may amount to upwards of $100 Billion annually.

Federal Government, which is responsible for taking care of immigration, is either helpless, unconcerned, incompetent, or all of the above.

This issue has gotten out of hand over the past 6 years. States, cities, counties and even small towns and villages are hurting because of this unjust burden. Some are taking the draconian steps of making their own laws to exclude illegal immigrants. The situation is serious and getting to be ominous every passing day.

Now Congress has come up with another draconian bi-partisan plan to issue tamper-proof id cards to legal immigrants, offer a form of amnesty to around 11 MILLION illegal immigrants in some half-baked, untested and unproven way and essentially shoving this whole issue under the rug and throwing a lot of people's money at it.

It has been around ten years since the last "Amnesty" was granted to a large number of illegal immigrants. The issue has not been solved ever since, as was promised during that program. In fact, it has ballooned out of control with this large looming number of "APPROXIMATELY" 11 Million! Nobody knows for sure!

If you have a border for your nation, you better protect it! Otherwise, there is no sense in having it.

So, there you have it. Then we will come to the point.

This story goes back many years.

I was 8 years old then. My younger brother was 4. A beautiful, adorable child. Very smart, very intelligent!

But there was a problem. When he set his mind on something, you could not take his attention away. Sometimes, you may try to tell him something, but it went in one ear and out the other. He never hurt anybody, or insulted anybody. He just loved to live in his own world; mostly oblivious to the things around him, when he was in that mood. The problem was that everybody expected him to be a normal child. He wasn't. He remembered everything, every small detail, and he would recite a conversation word-for-word, including when it happened and who said what.

His photographic memory awed everyone who noticed it. We had a fairly large family, and that gave us some comfort in choosing who we wanted to talk to. Most of the family members talked to almost everyone else, but when it came to my little brother, they were a little aloof.

My dad was a doctor, a very well-respected, towering figure - over 6 feet tall with a commanding presence. When he talked, everyone listened. He always told us what we were supposed to do, and we all listened. If we didn't do what he wanted, the consequences were severe - a good whacking with a stick. I, being the older among the siblings, was a frequent recipient of this discipline. Unfortunately, my kid brother received this treatment for no other reason than he was not paying attention to my dad. When this happened, he would cry uncontrollably. We would go behind the house and I would give him a hug and would console him. I would tell him that it would not happen again, knowing full well that that was not true.

The worst thing was that nobody in our family dared say anything against my dad. Everybody was afraid to challenge him. So, this went on and on.

We lived in a small village. Most of our relatives lived nearby. Among them was my uncle, who was especially fond of me and my brother. He lived only a mile and a half away from our house.

One day, I was visiting him and we had just finished the dinner and we were sitting outside. It was getting dark. My uncle was telling me and my cousin a funny story when we suddenly herd a shrill cry - something that chilled my blood. My uncle suddenly stopped, told me and my cousin to go inside the house and stay there. He took his bike and sped away.

He came back a couple of hours later. We were almost falling asleep. He told me that I would be staying there that night and told my aunt to make a bed for me.

My cousin and I tried to go to sleep, but that ear-piercing scream kept on coming back in our memory and kept us awake for a while. All along, we heard my uncle and my aunt whispering something for a long time. Then I heard my aunt say "Oh My God!" and then the whisper got quieter and quieter until we fell asleep.

Next morning when my uncle took me home, he knocked on the door, and when my mother opened the door, he just said "Good Morning", led me into the house, and then left, without saying anything.

By a strange coincidence, from that day onwards, my dad did not hit anyone. He would get angry, but then say something and just walk away. Our nightmare started easing off.

Many years passed. My brother was a grown up guy by now, had followed into my footsteps, got a degree in Physics, and then went even further, with a Master's degree in Physics. He became a scientist and received a lot of acclaim in his field. Always a top-notch student, always a high academic achiever and very focused on his research. He always had that very special place for me in his heart, but not for many of our family members, and very little for our parents.

It was almost thirty years after that night with that scary scream. I was visiting my uncle. It was after dinner and we were sitting outside, talking. It was getting darker, and then that memory suddenly came back. I asked my uncle about what happened that night. He paused for a long while. My aunt had heard our conversation while she was bring in some lemonade, and she said, "Go ahead, tell him. He is a grown up man now, and he can handle it".

Then my uncle told me the whole story. When he heard the scream, he had suspected something was wrong. His hunch was right. That scream had come from our house. When he reached there, he found my father hitting my brother for not listening to him. My mother was just standing there, scared and crying. My uncle grabbed my father's hand and said " You better stop this right now, otherwise you will have to deal with me , and I will NOT be easy on you! God will never forgive you for your sin. What did this poor child do to you that you are about to kill him? This better stop, and stop RIGHT NOW!" Then he turned to my mother and said "If this animal ever touches this child or anybody else, call me right away. I will make sure he does not live a moment longer". He then turned to my father and said, "You better apologize to your son and your wife right now, or else I will make sure everybody in town knows about this. You are guilty now and will be guilty forever in my mind and in front of God". My father muttered something and walked away. My mother said, "Thank you for saving my child and me. I will never forget this. God will always bless you for this".

My uncle stayed there for a while, but didn't say much.

On the way home, he was thinking why anyone as intelligent and successful as my father would act like a demon and hurt an innocent child. Guilty, indeed, he thought, guilty for failing to understand that some children are different and God made them that way!

My brother had Autism.

Very few people knew it then, and even now, very few people understand it. Instead of trying to understand more about this disorder, we expect these God's children who happen to be autistic to behave normally and within the framework of logic- something they are incapable of doing. And we keep on punishing them for NOT BEING NORMAL.

We are guilty as charged, and we have absolutely no defense against it, because we choose NOT TO LEARN ABOUT AUTISM, (AND ASPERGER'S SYNDROME, ANOTHER VERSION OF IT). We just keep on pumping up drugs like Ritalin and Adderall into our unsuspecting children, pushing them further down this abyss of hopelessness.

GUILTY AS CHARGED, INDEED!

************************************************************************************

Over the past 40 years, millions of children have been added to this exponentially growing epidemic. Latest medical research has identified mercury as the main culprit for this epidemic. People motivated by the seriousness of this ailment affecting their children have started forming groups that support techniques such as chelation that have helped their children get out of the vicious clutches of this monster.

We as a society have to wake up to the immenseness of this problem and start demanding answers and treatments. The consequences of neglecting it are enormous!

I am giving some useful links that can help my readers find answers. I invite them to go even further and search the web to get answers more pertinent to their needs. The more we know, the better prepared we are to deal with this calamity.

I wish hope and success to those amongst us who are facing this monster.

Peace and Blessings!

**************************************

Some links:

http://www.upi.com/Consumer_Health_Daily/Reports/2007/04/27/ped_med_alternative_autism_treatments/

http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/9.12/aspergers_pr.html

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/medicalnews.php?newsid=67953
(Mercury as the main cause)Searchbeamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11106738175859195188noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1792281961052908216.post-27461659717106721112007-04-24T09:54:00.000-07:002007-04-27T06:42:49.857-07:00Dreams : What Do They Mean. For years and years, I wondered about dreams.

What are they?

Where do they come from?

Why do some of them keep repeating time after time?

Why do they sometimes look so real and vivid that we almost feel as if we are living in them?

Is there any meaning to them?

Are they trying to tell us something, some kind of warning, message or some prediction of future events?

Being a creature of science, I wanted to know the answers to all of these questions, and maybe some more. But no matter how hard I tried, I could not go very far. I heard some clairvoyant souls bring some spiritual discussions and some para-normal theories into play; some used dreams as a link to the past, present or future events; some used it as a window into the past life and some other equally dubious concepts.

In short, these explanations made interesting stimulants for cocktail-party conversations, including the usual "My Dream Is Better Than Yours" or "My Dream Is Scarier Than Yours" challenges! Nothing of substance, of course! The third-party experiences and validations were also the staple of such discussions. Alcohol and good food seemed to fuel these episodes, and combined with the insatiable human curiosity, it took the conversations in different directions.

If you tried to distill it into something useful and meaningful, you came up with nothing more than vaporware.

So it went on, until I started studying computers during my college years in early seventies. At that time, I started to understand that computers came in two flavors: analog and digital. Analog computers took in data in a continuous, unbroken fashion, and required considerable amount of storage space to store, retrieve and manipulate it, while the digital computers broke the data into 1's and 0's, thereby making it easy to store, retrieve and manipulate it. My professor explained that analog data was like a live musical concert, or like an ocean wave where the motion was continuous and unbroken - in other words, the events we see in real everyday life in a continuous form, like a sine wave. The digital form was like a motion that we saw with a strobe.

That got me thinking. It seemed that all real events seemed analog, while the digital events were analog events chopped up into small chunks, linear and simple - 1's and 0's. It seemed that all of our senses gave us real, analog data that was continuous.

I wondered what happened to the enormous amounts of analog data that we were collecting throughout our waking moments. It must be somewhere, I figured, because we could always remember the events of past in vivid details, with the appropriate sensory connections. We remembered our visits to our grandmother, and could remember in detail her voice, the delicious smell of her home-cooked meals and the taste and flavor of her heavenly cookies and the sensation of swinging on the tire swings. We remembered our first dates, the first cry of our babies right after they were born. So, all of this information was neatly filed somewhere in our brain, easily accessed at the first hint of a connection. The massive storage space needed for such data and such an elegant, responsive and efficient system of retrieval of the information meant only one thing. It was probably stored in some digital form to make it available for fast, efficient and accurate retrieval.

While all these conjectures were going through my mind over a period of time, I had a chance to meet one of my friends who worked in a bank. During our conversation, I asked him a question that always perplexed me: why did banks keep such short hours, and fewer working days (remember, this was in early seventies!). He explained that all the transactions that took place during the course of a business day took at least twice as much time to sort through, match and post all the transactions accurately. He called it a "back-room" operation.

Can there be a similar process going on in our brain, where all this massive information coming in must be sorted, posted and filed neatly and accurately so that it can be available quickly, I wondered.

Over the next six months or so, I was always thinking about the meaning of all of this, when one night, while I was sleeping, I suddenly woke up around 2 am and started putting all these pieces together in my mind. It was as if I found out a missing piece of a puzzle, and I was so excited, I could not go to sleep and had to make sense of it all.

One of the first thought that hit me was that during the day when we are awake, we are constantly taking in live data, leaving very little time to analyze it, sort it and file it away, because the "fight or flight" instinct kept us on the alert all the time and the survival instinct took precedence over everything else. I thought the most logical thing for our brain to do was to wait until we went to sleep, when, because of the safety and comfort of our environment, only a small portion of our brain was monitoring events on a reflexive mode. This seemed like the ideal time for the brain to do the "back-room operation" of sorting through the massive analog data collected during our waking hours, convert it into digital form, and index it, label it and file it with a suitable tag, so that it will be easy to retrieve.

Then came the interesting question. How does it relate to the data already in files? When I started thinking about it, I pretended that I was a "back-room" clerk, and started visualizing the kinds of situations I would face. One of the first thing that hit me was, what if the teller made a wrong entry? I would have to put it aside for a later time, when everything else was taken care of and I had more time to look at it and check it out, and if I couldn't sort it out, seek some help. When I finished all my filing, and this wrong entry was still there, that would stay on the clipboard for someone higher up to sort out. In the flash of an inspiration, I thought that this is what we could be seeing as dreams-things that could not relate to anything else in the past, and had no logical place to go to.

The question of recurring dreams could be explained in this way. If over several nights, there is no valid connection to other data, this wrong entry will keep on popping up, until, at some future, predetermined point, this data would go into a "round file" and get lost!

Also, that would explain some of the dreams as the result of this analog-to-digital conversion, where the data just would not fit into the format.

(There is a lot more to it that has developed in my thought process over the years, but that could very well be the subject of another blog!)

So I propose this as my hypothesis of dreams, and now I leave it open to discussion, hoping that someone, somewhere , may find something useful, meaningful and beneficial in understanding this mystery that has kept us awake at night, tossing and turning and trying to make some sense of it!

***********************************************************************

Response to the comments:

I really appreciate your thoughts, observations and references related to this blog.

I am planning to publish part two of this blog soon, after my material is ready.

In the meanwhile, I would like to address the thoughts and comments of the responders who were kind enough to share them here:

1: jorge, thank you for your comment. About 5 of the people attending the event said they understood what this meant and shared their own stories and surmised how their dreams could be explained in the way I was proposing.

I am extremely pleased to read about the experiments at the Rockefeller Institute that were the subject of the article in the Discover Magazine in 1992, because it seems to validate my hypothesis.

Thank you very much for the link.

6. aem, the questions you raised are very interesting and provocative!

I will try to address them in one of my future blogs.

Keep reading and participating! It is taking a larger bite out of our budget. Some folks have to make serious compromises with their food and healthcare budgets just to keep on driving that car/SUV/Old Jalopy!

Is there relief in sight?

All signs indicate that there is none.

The best we can do is to cut down on our driving, try to combine chores so that we make fewer trips and generally be very conscious of every mile we drive so that we do not waste gas.

Even when all of these steps are taken, there is still that sticker shock when we see the pump showing astronomical numbers when we fill up. Companies like ExxonMobil are making sinful profits and some of their CEO's are taking half a BILLION dollars in paychecks while rest of us average Joe's are suffering! This is an economic calamity that is hitting every pocketbook!

When I got exasperated with this and talked to my mechanic Bob about this, he suggested something that sounded almost like an old wives' tale!

He suggested that I put 6 ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas tank every time I filled the tank. he said that it would give me better gas mileage and help the engine run smoother and extend its life.

Being a skeptic about such claims, I took his advice with a grain of salt. Nonetheless, I decided to try it. The worst that can happen, I figured, would be a few dollars down the drain; on the other hand, if it works, it may be good for my car and my wallet, too!

Now, at this point, I must put a disclaimer. I have no financial connection whatsoever with Marvel Mystery oil, nor do I own any stock in this company or have a gainful employment with them. Neither does anyone in my family.

After I put the first 6 ounces in the tank when I filled up, I forgot all about it until I went for another fill-up. Being a finicky record keeper, I keep a meticulous record of the miles I get per tankful of gas on all of my 4 cars. At the time of fill-up, I noticed that my car got 60 extra miles for the tank of gas. I thought that my driving habits got better, there was less head wind, I probably inflated the tires just right, etc. etc. I figured another tankful would even the things out. But next tankful gave me similar results. Then I tried it in my other cars, one after another.
The results were the same - an average of 60 to 65 extra miles for the tankful. The cars seemed to run a lot smoother, too! I picked up a couple of quart bottles at Advance Auto Parts at less than $4 each!

Things were getting interesting! For about 65 cents worth of Marvel Mystery oil, I was getting 60 to 65 extra miles. You just couldn't beat that!

Being a Physicist, I had to know the reason why this was happening. So I started digging deeper to understand this. What I found out made a lot of sense.

Inside a car engine, a tight-fitting piston moves inside the cylinder. This piston has 3 sets of compression rings that prevent the combustion gases from escaping into the crankcase ( the tank that holds the engine oil). During the movement of the piston, the area of the cylinder near the top, between the top and bottom rings, does not get much lubrication. This causes friction, and therefore loss of energy. Translated, it means that we waste gas. Apparently, the Marvel Mystery Oil lubricates this portion of the cylinder, reducing the friction. This means that there is less wastage of gas, therefore better mileage! It also cleans the valve seats, reducing carbon build-up, and improves the compression in the cylinders, therefore helping burn the gas more efficiently.

When I admitted my skepticism and eventual acceptance of this additive to Bob, my mechanic (who also happens to be my friend), he just shrugged his shoulders and said that I should trust his judgment!

Ever since, I have been preaching the virtues to Marvel Mystery Oil to everybody I know, and they are getting similar results.

I felt I should share this experience with my friends on this blogosphere, with the hope that they can benefit from this and save money in this brutal gasoline warfare.

I found out something more about this company that makes it. This product has been on the market since 1923 - that is 84 years! - and THEY HAVEN'T CHANGED ANYTHING!

That says something about good old American ingenuity!

P.S. Some additional information:

All 4 cars were fuel injected, however the information on the bottle says that it works equally well with carbureted engines, too.

All 4 cars had high mileage, from 75,000 to 130,000 miles.

The information on the bottle gives specifics regarding warranties.
________________________________________________________________

RESPONSE TO COMMENTS POSTED HERE:

Thank you, folks, for your comments!

Joe, I would like to mention something regarding the 4 cars I have. When there are four drivers in the family, all four going in different directions on different schedules, and long distances, there is little choice I have! To make the best of situation, I try to save my money by using Marvel. It has worked very well for me, and saved quite a few bucks.

Chris, Marvel can be used in crank case as well, which I occasionally do to clean the crank case, crankshaft bearings etc. and to open the oil passages that seem to get clogged with gunk. It also helps quieting the rocker arms and lifters. I do not know about the compatibility of Marvel with synthetics, because I do not use synthetics in my cars. However, I will give you a link that you can go to, to find answer to this and other questions that you and others here may have regarding Marvel. I can only talk about my own experience.

http://www.marvelmysteryoil.com/

One interesting thing I found out from this website is the guy who invented Marvel Mystery Oil was the one who invented Marvel carburetor which was used in a majority of cars in the post WWI era!

nascarbum, I would like to reiterate my disclaimer. I have no connection whatsoever with Marvel, neither does anyone in my family. I do not accept payments from companies to promote their products. This gives me the freedom to speak my mind and be objective about what I say and write.

Jim, I appreciate your comment. I cannot ask you to believe in anything. That is your choice. However, if you want to benefit from my experience, you are welcome to do it. That was the sole purpose of this blog. I hate to pay those outrageous prices for gas, and I believe a majority of people do, too!

Manoli, Because I do not own a diesel vehicle, I cannot say. However, if you follow the link above, you may find that information.

http://www.marvelmysteryoil.com/

richnauer, dan, kevin and frank, I took the same attitude the first time I used Marvel. It worked for me, and I hope it works for you, too.

roger, I have not seen any fouled plugs in my cars. I believe the fuel injection system and computer management of the gas and air mixture, combined with very precise control of ignition timing may all have worked together to prevent it.

I like your idea of buying ExxonMobil stock. With the money I am saving, I may be able to afford a few shares!

Andy's idea of riding a bike is really good. It can help both ways, and will also make us feel a lot better about ourselves!

Thanks for your sharing your thoughts here.

-Searchbeam.Searchbeamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11106738175859195188noreply@blogger.com15
